THE PAPER SAVER
Description:
The Paper Saver is a printer utility for laser and H/P
inkjet printers. It is a great solution for reducing the
paper glut that comes when printing large ASCII text files.
The program can print up to 8 pages of text on every sheet
in a tiny, but very readable font. Or you can use a
standard 10 point font in various layouts (landscape,
back and front sides, etc.) Can print 1, 2, 4 or 8 pages
on every sheet in single or double columns, front and/or
back. It even prints in folded "booklet" format. Features
page numbering, date, time and file name stamps on every
page. Intelligent pop-up window menus make navigation a
delight.
Requirements:
IBM PC compatible with DOS 3.0 or greater and a Hewlett-
Packard DeskJet series printer, or any laser printer that
supports or emulates a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer.
To start:
To begin the program, enter SAVER at the DOS prompt. After
the opening title screen, you will be presented a Main
Menu. If this is your very first time that you have used
The Paper Saver, then choose the "Configuration options"
selection. This will display a larger menu listing. From
the "Configuration options" menu, select your printer and
printer port. You should also select the establish the
page mode (landscape or portrait) that you wish to print.
Once these three selections have been made, return to the
Main Menu. All of your selections will be saved in a .CFG
configuration file, so that next time you use the program
these preliminary steps will not be necessary.
After configuring the program to work with your printer,
select a file by first picking "Select file to print" from
the Main Menu. This will display a file/directory listing
menu. Locate and identify the ASCII file you wish to
print.
Once you have selected the file you want to print, then
proceed with the actual printing sequence.
If you wish to by-pass the file/directory listing menu, you
can "feed" The Paper Saver the name of the file you wish to
print from the command line. For example, at the DOS prompt
enter -> SAVER C:\DOS\README.TXT to have the README.TXT file
in the C:\DOS directory selected for printing. This will
reduce the number of steps necessary prior to printing, by-
passing the Main Menu altogether.
